It will cost you money and require paperwork to visit EU after Brexit

The EU has just announced a plan that could lead to travellers from the UK having to pay money and fill out an online form in order to travel there after Brexit.

On the 25th of April, representatives of the EU Parliament and the EU Council agreed on the proposal for a European travel information and authorisation system (ETIAS).

ETIAS will impact all VISA exempt third countries, which is exactly what Theresa May and the Brexiteers are negotiating for the UK to become.

According to an EU Council press release, people from third countries like the post-Brexit UK

will need to obtain a travel authorisation before their trip, via an online application. For each application, the applicant will be required to pay a travel authorisation fee of 7 euros.

The information submitted in each application will be automatically processed against EU and relevant Interpol databases to determine whether there are grounds to refuse a travel authorisation. If no hits or elements requiring further analysis are identified, the travel authorisation will be issued automatically and quickly. This is expected to be the case for most applications.

A development that I did not notice plastered to the side of any buses during the EU referendum.

More evidence, if any more was needed, that leaving the EU will erode many freedoms and privileges we currently take for granted.
